Past Projects – Crochet

Welcome back to my next post highlighting things I’ve created in the past. This time around, I’m focusing on crochet projects! Crochet is NOT my favorite craft. I much prefer the feel of a knit fabric, but some projects are just easier to do in crochet, or that’s the way the pattern was written. That’s why you’ll notice the majority of these items were requested by family members.

Getting Started

As mentioned last time, I learned to crochet from my grandmother, however I never really did anything with it other than a few test swatches of flat stitching. Therefore, when my mom asked for help making this little guy, it was time to jump on the struggle bus and learn how to crochet in the round. I think he turned out pretty good for my first foray.

Unicorns

I forget who first spotted this cute unicorn hat pattern, but it was probably my mom. I knew I had to make one for my niece Riley. And, of course, who could resist making the matching unicorn? Not me!

Giant Shawl

My mother spotted this pattern and fell in love with it. If memory serves, she even dyed all the wool for it. It proved difficult to photograph since it was like 6 or 8 of these infinity sections all joined together, and it was a bear for me to make. I hope she still uses it from time to time. Or maybe it’s lost in her closet along with some missing Christmas gifts. *wink*

Giant Stuffies

My mother spotted the patterns for these giant crochet animals by Heidi Bears and just HAD to have a hippopotamus for Christmas. Of course, once she got her wish, my niece wanted a big animal too, so she got her elephant the following Christmas.

So Many Squares

Leave it to my mother to foist another crochet project on me. She died all the wool for this and even made several of the smallest squares. However, she passed the project along to me to finish. I’m not super happy with the fact that the larger squares have a slant or spiral to them. I didn’t really notice it until I was laying things out to sew together (a task that I don’t wish upon my worst enemy) and I did my best to fix them via a process called “blocking” but it didn’t quite fix it. I did make her sew in all the ends, though, so she did help a lot with the worst part of the project!

Something Just for Me

I found this sparkly, variegated yarn in the store and decided I absolutely had to find a use for it. After searching high and low, I landed on a dragon’s egg inspired dice bag, that required me to learn alligator stitch.

Learning Mosaic Crochet

I happened along several very cool patterns by Sixel Design that I loved, but required me to learn a whole new kind of crochet. I started off with some smaller introductory projects and then dove into the skulls blanket that I’m currently working on. I’m very close to completing it: I have one last section to do at the top and then I have to add an envelope border around the whole thing to hide all the loose ends. Very much looking forward to having the blanket completed and on display in my home.

Next Time…

I’ve now taken you through my knit and crochet highlights. Next time, I’ll showcase my past my embroidery projects! Until then, stay safe and sane folks.

Thanks sooo much for putting up with your difficult mother’s requests. I LOVE all the things you make for me! Just a note, I bought the yarn for the shawl, but dyed all the yarn for the many squared blanket. That was a huge project in itself!❤️
