Past Projects – Embroidery

Rounding out my series featuring past projects is one last post focusing on different kinds of embroidery. You’ll notice going through here that social media groups for crafters are my kryptonite!

Cross Stitch

On the left - Cross stitch sampler of Harry potter, with banners depicting all four houses, small versions of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as well as some spell names (lumos, expelliarmus, ridikulus, and expect patronum) along with several small versions of things associated with the books - owls, the maurauder's map, brooms, the triwizard cup, the deathly hollows, the doe and stag patronus, a time turner, flying keeps, and butterbeer. On the right - alphabet sampler where each letter is a fictional character - Album Dumblefore, Buffy Summers, Captain America, Deadpool, Elastigirl, Flash, Giles and Groot, Han Solo, Mr Incredible, Jon Snow, James T Kirk, Luke and Leia, Melissandre, Nick Fury, Ood, Harry Potter, Q, River Song and Rose Tyler, Superman, Tyrion Lannister, Ursula, Voldemort, Wonder Woman and Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, Yoda, and Zygon. Each stands next to their letter. G, L, R and W have their characters standing on either side of the letter.

My mother taught me to cross stitch when I was growing up, and I had only done little projects, like bookmarks. Most large cross stitch patterns didn’t appeal to me. However, when I found this Harry Potter sampler, I knew it would be perfect for Kim. And then, when I saw that the traditional second year anniversary gift is cotton, I knew I had to make her another one. This time, I bought several different ABC samplers and pieced them together. I had to customize many of them since the alphabet fonts were not the same in each pattern. She has both of these hanging in her office at work.

On the left - a sampler that looks like the cupboards/shelves of a witch's kitchen, full of bottles with interesting items inside - organs, skulls, eyeballs, crystals, mushrooms, and suspicious liquids along with one bubbling purple cauldron. On the right - a circular arrangement of rainbow colored dice in concentric circles, with a D20 in the middle, orange D12's around them, then yellow D10s and green D8's, and ending with a circle of blue D6s and purple D4s. The dice do not have any numbers on them.

After doing several large projects for Kim, I decided it was time to do some for me. The “Witch’s Kitchen” is very large and has tons of fun details. I believe the frame is 16″ square. The rainbow dice piece is smaller, but that’s only because I decided to be insane and stitch it on fabric where I fit 28 stitches in each inch. For reference, that means there’s 294 stitches in one of the purple D4 dice. Thank goodness for magnification!

Spoilers!

Words arranged to form the Tardis (a blue phone booth), stitched in dark blue on a white background. The light at the top and the windows are stitched in a slightly lighter blue. The quotes going from top to bottom are: Dr Who. Bow-ties are cool! Geronimo! Allons-y! Bad Wolf. I am and always will be the hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams. You know that in nine hundred years in time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important before. He's like fire and ice. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe. And he's wonderful! You want weapons? We're in a library. Books! Best weapons in the world! Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and the doctor comes to call, everybody lives. The universe is big. It's vast and complicated, and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad, but vice versa, the bad things don't always spoil the good things and make them unimportant. There is something you'd better understand about me 'cause it's important, and one day your life may depend on it - I am definitely a madman with a box. Before I go, I just want to tell you - you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I. Never Cruel or cowardly. Never give up, never give in. The angels have the phone box! Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. Come along, Pond. Hello Sweetie. This is who I am, right here, right now, all right? All that counts is here and now, and this is me! It's a fez. I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool. Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Rule one - the doctor lies. We're all just stories in the end. Just make it a good one.

Several years back, somewhere in the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who, I had an idea to make a TARDIS completely out of Doctor Who quotes. Armed with graph paper and a list of my favorites, I drew it up and created what you see here. I had once thought about even selling the pattern on Etsy and my mom made a version, too, but I never got around to listing it. I think it would be cool to try doing it in a light blue on a darker fabric and doing the “windows” in white. This poor piece is still sitting in a drawer, waiting to be taken to a craft store for a nice custom framing job.

Blackwork

An arrangement of different colored hexagons, 49 in total, progressing from indigo at the top, through the rainbow (purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and cyan) to end with blue again at the bottom. Each hexagon is filled with a unique, complex, geometric pattern.

I can never pass up a good rainbow themed pattern, or acquiring a new skill, so I just had to make this beautiful blackwork sampler that I discovered in a crafty Facebook group. Very much like how I created the TARDIS, it is simply a mixture of straight line to create different geometrical patterns. It’s displayed in my home in a 16″x16″ frame.

Fabric Collage

5 landscapes made of different fabrics layered on top of each other and adorned with beads, sequins, iridescent thread, and contrasting stitches. The top three are mountains. The bottom left is a spooky tree with bats and a large moon in the background, and the last is a sun/moon behind purple mountains (done in the colors of the nonbinary flag.)

Crafting groups on social media introduced me to the world of fabric collage, and it looked easy enough that I thought I could give it a shot. Most of these pieces really shine when you look at them in person, since they have sparkly bits and bobs. For example, the top center has an aurora borealis made just out of iridescent thread. The top right is a kit from the woman who inspired me, Hannah over at Needle or Thread, and the bottom right is inspired by the colors of the nonbinary flag.

Satin Stitch

6 embroidery hoops of landscapes. From the top left to the bottom right, they are: Mount Ranier, Yosemite, an abstract pastel mountain scape, a vivid blue and pink mountain scape on black with a crescent moon, a blue and yellow mountain, and a mountain valley done in blues, purples and oranges.

Through following Needle or Thread on social media, I was introduced to a landscape embroidery artist who offered kits of their designs. It was a new stitch I had never done before, but I quickly found out how simple and soothing it was. As you may have seen from my monthly posts, I’ve been making several of her designs lately. These are the ones that I completed before starting the blog. Each is 5″ wide except for the smaller pastel landscape, which is only 3″ wide and was a gift. The rest are part of a growing constellation of embroidery pieces on my wall.

Next Time….

We’re reaching the end of the month, which means my March update will be coming soon. I’ve got completed projects to share with you, as well as some fun updates about a new hobby I’m trying out. Until then, take care! ♥ A
